8337 - Hourly Animal Husbandry/Cage Wash Technician

This position will apply animal husbandry skills to care for research animals under the direction of Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC). This is a part-time position approximately 24-36 hours per week.

Responsibilities include:

Perform animal husbandry (care, feeding, watering, and cleaning); maintain proper sanitation, environment and VAF status of housing units; maintain/verify proper record keeping (census, breeding records, animal health, surgery and maintenance records, document sanitation and equipment maintenance); may provide technical support for LARC and research investigators (assist with post-operative analgesics, and serology); and participate in continuing education and training.

The ideal candidate must be able to have direct physical contact with multiple species of animals. Must be willing to participate in Occupational Health Program for LARC employees, including receiving immunizations recommended by Occupational Health Services.

The candidate must be able to follow verbal and written instructions, manage multiple concurrent tasks with frequent interruptions, and maintain confidentiality. This position entails very heavy and strenuous work, often involving heavy lifting, (racks of filled water bottles, 25 lb bags of feed), and pushing (animals to 250 lb), repetitive motions, bending, lifting, some delicate operations (drawing blood, giving injections).

Required: High school diploma or equivalent required plus 6 months animal care experience preferred.
